Overview Francis Paine grew up on his family’s farm in Randolph, Vermont, and was the youngest of eight siblings. Paine worked the farm with his father and brothers, tending crops and sheep during the summer and sugaring maple syrup in the spring. He also served as a school teacher during the winter, teaching around 30 students of varying ages.
