Scope and Contents

Collection contains materials primarily related to the family of Marjorie Holbrook Scott. It includes family photo albums, scrapbooks containing clippings from magazines and newspapers, photographs, photographic negatives, correspondence, Marjorie Holbrook Scott's school work, and other family documents. Most of the older photographs in the collection are portraits of family members, while the photographic negatives (dating from the early mid 1900s) appear to depict boating and family trips, and were taken primarily by Marjorie Holbrook Scott and her husband, Chester M. Way.

Biographical / Historical

Marjorie Holbrook Scott (d. 1989), daughter of Walter B. Scott and Effie B. Reed, attended the University of Vermont circa 1916. She married Chester M. Way in 1928.

Chester M. Way (circa 1900-1973) studied economics at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1922. He joined the masons in 1923. Way became a successful retailer, vice president and treasurer of Porter Screen Co. in Burlington, Vermont, director of Continental Screen Co. in Detroit, Michigan, director of the Green Mountain Mutual Fire Insurance Co. in Montpelier, Vermont, owner of stores in Bristol and Bridport, Vermont, and owner of the Fli-Rite School Aviation in Swanton, Vermont. In the mid-1940s, he bought an inn in East Middlebury and renamed it the Waybury Inn. Way was fond of boating and seems to have owned boats beginning in his late 20s.
