Scope and Contents

Collection consists of 11 handwritten letters by Bevier to his parents from 1862-1864 during his time of service in the Civil War. Also included are photographs from the 50th Anniversary Reunion of the 44th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry.

Biographical / Historical

Isaac Bevier was born to Benjamin H. Bevier and Sarah Amanda (Sallie) Elmore in New Paltz, New York, on January 20, 1842. He served in the Civil War as Private, Co. E., 44th NY Infantry, and was wounded in action on August 30, 1862 at Bull Run, VA, and on June 3, 1864, he resided at Vassar Brothers Home, Cold Harbour, VA. He married Hellen Elizabeth (Nelly) Stevens (1844-1896) on October 3, 1867. He died August 15, 1931, Poughkeepsie, New York.
