General Clinton Dugald MacDougall papers

General Clinton Dugald MacDougall (1839-1914) was born in Glasgow Scotland, and immigrated to Canada in 1842 with his parents, who later settled in Auburn, New York. From 1856-1869, MacDougall studied law and worked as a banker. He became captain in the Seventy-fifth Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry in 1861, and Lieutenant Colonel of the One Hundred and Eleventh Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry in 1862. He became Brevetted Brigadier General of Volunteers in 1865, and was honorably mustered out in the same year. MacDougall was wounded twice during the war; at Gettysburg and at Five Forks. MacDougall was elected as a Republican to Congress from 1837-1877. In 1869, he was appointed postmaster of Auburn, New York. He served as United States Marshal of the northern judicial district of New York from 1877 to 1885 and from 1901 to 1910. MacDougall married Eva Sabine in 1867 (Sabine died in 1875) and married Marianna Cook in 1878. He died in Paris, France, in 1914, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
