Scope and Contents

Collection contains 44 diaries kept by Rollin Forbes (1851?-1931) and his son Benjamin Forbes (1888-1974), and concise documents about daily activities on their farm, with special attention given to beekeeping. Diaries are handwritten. In addition to notes of daily activities on the Forbes farm, there are brief accounts of weather activity, farm chores, bee care, harvests, and care of cattle, also documented.

Biographical / Historical

Rollin E. Forbes (1851?-1931) of St. George, Chittenden county, Vermont was a noted beekeeper in the state. Forbes was born in Hinesburg, Vermont around 1851, the son of John and Hannah Forbes, and brother to Frank C. and Robert R. Forbes. With his brothers, Rollin Forbes owned and operated what was known as the Forbes Brothers Farm. In 1887, he purchased new property and began working more seriously as a beekeeper. Benjamin H. Forbes (1888-1974) was the son of Rollin and Ada Forbes. He was born in St. George, Chittenden County, Vermont.
