Collection contains the writing of Chester Way in typescript and holograph form, including creative works (including fiction, plays, songs, and poetry) childhood writings, correspondence, economic and political writings, class notes, and diaries.

Note that most materials are undated.

Biographical / Historical

Chester M. Way (ca 1900-1973) grew up in Burlington, Vt. and earned a BS in economics at the University of Vermont in 1922. He joined the masons in 1923. Over the next couple decades he became a successfull reteailer: vice president and treasurer of Porter Screen Co., Burlington, Vt.; director of Continental Screen Co., Detroit, Mich.; director of the Green Mountain Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Montpelier, Vt.; owner of stores in Bristol and Bridport, Vt.; owner of the Fli-Rite School of Aviation in Swanton, Vt. until late 1949. In the mid 1940s he bought an inn in East Middlebury and re-named it the Waybury Inn. He was fond of boating, and seems to have owned boats beginning in his late-20s. He aspired to be a writer of songs and plays. Some materials seem to have been written under the pseudonym Roiden Kranz. He married Marjorie Scott about 1928. He died in 1973.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Received by Middlebury College in the acquisition of Painter House from Chester M. Way. Way gave the house to the College in 1968 subject to life tenancy for himself and his wife. Way died in 1973, and his wife died in 1989.
