Scope and Contents
Collection contains mostly handwritten letters and some typescript letters addressed to Carrie Evelyn Aiken and Carrie Joie Aiken from various senders, between 1884 and 1903. Most letters have accompanying envelopes. Many of the letters are personal in nature and they detail the senders' daily activities. Collection contains one folder of handwritten letters to miscellaneous recipients from 1885 to 1938.
Collection also contains various miscellaneous items including an 1899 map of Ceylon, as well as approximately 40 photographic negatives and photographs. Also included is an article announcing H.E. Aiken's retirement from the Chautauqua G.L.F. Service Co, and a signed pamphlet from a Testimonial Dinner given by the Buffalo Athletic Club in 1938 in honor of H.E. Aiken, featuring a photograph of H.E. Aiken.

Biographical / Historical
Carrie E. (and perhaps Carrie J. as well) Aiken, appears to have lived in Jamestown, NY. Both Carrie E. as well as Carrie J. seem to have been schoolteachers. Carrie E. and Carrie J. Aiken were perhaps sisters, as a number of letters are addressed "Dear Girls" and "Dear Sisters." Carrie J. Aiken died in 1923.
