Biographical / Historical
The Christian A. Johnson Memorial Building was completed in 1968, and with its completion came the beginnings of the Middlebury College art collection. The Johnson Gallery was initially directed by Professor David Bumbeck, who acquired numerous prints and nineteenth century sculptures. The Friends of the Art Museum Program, established in 1969, helped manage museum costs. Richard Saunders was hired in 1985 as the first full-time director of the Gallery. In 1992, after the completion of the Mahaney Center for the Arts building, the museum was moved to its present location in the Center for the Arts, and renamed the Middlebury College Museum of Art. For records concerning the Museum of Art, see A24.
