Scope and Contents
Five boxes, one containing an LP album, four containing reel-to-reel tapes, primarily recorded by MacArthur between 1948-1965. Tapes contain performances by various folk singers as well as lectures by Helen Hartness Flanders.

Biographical / Historical
Margaret MacArthur (1928-2006) was an American singer and player of the Appalachian dulcimer. In 1948, MacArthur and her husband moved to Vermont, where she lived for the rest of her life. She became interested in recordings of folk singers made by Helen Hartness Flanders and subsequently learned, sang, and recorded a number of those songs. In 1962, MacArthur signed to Folkways Records and recorded nine albums throughout her life. MacArthur served as artist-in-residence with the Vermont Council of the Arts from 1990-1991.
MacArthur taught music, performed concerts, collected folk-song recordings, and was ultimately an important figure in preserving and publicizing traditional music in Vermont.
