Scope and Contents
Collection contains approximately 20 handwritten letters exchanged between the Shepardson family between 1892 and 1901. During this time, Shepardson's wife and son appear to have been traveling, writing from such destinations as Spain, Italy, Belgium and Germany. Letters to Shepardson from his wife and son describe their daily activities abroad. Shepardson's missives often express how much he misses his family, and describe his activities, such as lecturing and working on theses. A final folder contains various letters to and from the Shepardson family, apparently after Cora and young Frank returned from their trip (1897-1901).

Biographical / Historical
Francis Wayland Shepardson (1862-1937) was born in Cheviot (now Cincinnati). Sherpardson attended Denison University, Brown University, and Yale University. He married Cora Lenore Whitcomb on September 3, 1884. The couple had one son, John Whitcomb. Sherpardson was a teacher at the Young Ladies' Institute, in Granville, Ohio from 1883-1887. He was editor of the Granville Times from 1887-1890, and was a member of the faculty at the University of Chicago. Shepardson was also a member of Beta Theta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa (senator of the United Chapters, and vice president). He authored The Beta Book in 1927, Beta Lore in 1928, Beta Life in 1929, Denison University, 1831-1931, A Centennial History in 1931, and Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities in 1927. He died August 9, 1937.
