Scope and Contents
Fourteen holograph letters and one telegram written by Clemens, one story fragment, and one telegram from Luther E. Price to Clemens. Recipients of Clemens' letters include W.S. Andrews, Thomas Bailey Aldrich, "Mr. Tyler," Roswell Smith, Fred J. Hall, James Gordon Bennett, "Miss Higgins," Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. The letters are dated between 1873 and 1906.
The letters primarily contain friendly news and discussions of literary matters. In one letetr to Thomas Bailey Aldrich, dated June 3, 1877, Clemens writes of his return from Bermuda, his intention to travel to Elmira, New York to write a book during the summer, and Howell's views on "indelicate" literature. One fragment mentioning the arrival of Reverend Twichell, dated April 17, 1908, includes part of a story.
