Journals of Mary Elizabeth Allen Martin, 1864 - 1865

Mary Elizabeth Allen Martin (MEM) produced two journals while living in Foochow: the first volume is inscribed "Mrs. M.E.A. Martin's Diary / A present from her husband / Foochow Jan. 1st 1864" and the entries date from Jan. 1, 1864 to May 28th, 1865; the second journal contains attached and loose pressed flowers and leaves, sporadically interspersed among the journal pages. The first few pages hold leaves and flowers taped onto journal pages accompanied by MEM's holograph notes on their meaning. The notes date from Dec. 1864 to Feb. 1865 and reference the burial sites of her late husband Carlos and son John Lucius.
