Biographical / Historical
Jeremiah Atwater (1773-1858) was the first president of Middlebury College, beginning in 1800. He had previously served as principal of the Addison County Grammar School. Atwater left Middlebury in 1809 to become the third president of Dickinson College.

Physical Description
The Jeremiah Atwater key is believed to be the third oldest in existence. It is a square silver medal with a silver bow on top, hanging on a pink string. On one side, a hand points to three stars above the letters PBK. The opposite side features the letters "SP" and the date "December 5 1776."
