Biographical / Historical
Stephen Albert Freeman (1898-1999) served as Acting President of Middlebury College in 1941, 1942, and 1952. Freeman also served as Professor of French from 1925 to 1963, Director of the Language Schools from 1946 to 1963, and Vice President of the College from 1943 to 1963. Clara Yu was the 14th President of the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Yu was appointed Vice President for Languages at Middlebury in 1993, and restructured the operation of the Summer Language Schools and Schools Abroad. The program designed by Yu became the basis for Middlebury's International Studies major.
