Biographical / Historical

Elbert Charles Cole (1891-1976) graduated from Middlebury College in 1915, earned his master's degree from Trinity College in 1918, and his doctorate from Harvard in 1924. Cole was an internationally known biologist and trustee emeritus of Middlebury College. Cole led scientific expeditions to Panama and Arizona and taught biology (primarily at Williams College) for 32 years. He was the director of Marine Invertebrate Zoology and a board member at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Cole served as a trustee of Middlebury College from 1939 to 1969, and acted as secretary from 1959 to 1969. Cole married Ida Nell Ainsworth in 1916 and the couple had three children: Gerald Ainsworth, Elbert Charles, and Phyllis Anne. He later married Margaret Caldwell Grierson in 1933.
