Scope and Contents

Two handwritten letters from Christopher Hughes to Churchill Cambreleng. The first letter was sent from "In Town," the second from Stockholm. The letters discuss Hughes' daily activities as well as details of his travels and people encountered.

Biographical / Historical

Christopher Hughes (1786-1849) was a charge d'affaires to Sweden 1819-1825, to the Netherlands, and then Sweden again in 1830. He returned to the United States in 1845, bearing the 1815 Treaty of Ghent, ending the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain.

Churchill Caldom Cambreleng (1786-1862) was a congressional representative from New York.
