One holograph letter written by Bret Harte to his wife, Anna, dated January 7, 1880, London. In the letter, Harte mentions meeting George Eliot and remarks, "I was very pleasantly disappointed in her appearance, having heard so much of the plainness of her features. But I find them only strong, intellectual and noble--indeed I have seldom seen a grander face!" Harte also mentions meeting the novelist Thomas Hardy, artist George Du Maurier, and novelist Henry James.
