The collection consists of two series: Helen Abel Buffum letters, and Clara M. Buffum manuscripts. Helen's letters comprise 20 folders and are primarily from her second husband, Harlan C. Brown, between 1935-1937. Collection includes both holograph and typescript letters.
The second series contains handwritten schoolwork, poetry, and stories written by Clara May Buffum. While the work in these four folders is undated, Clara May Buffum attended Middlebury College from 1905 to 1909. The final folder in this series contains a 1909 photograph postcard from commencement, the 1909 commencement program, as well as photographs of Clara Buffum and Herbert Hall.
Lulu Helen Abel [Buffum] [Brown] (Middlebury College class of 1923) was born July 6, 1902, to Warren D. and Elizabeth (Street) Abel. She began at Middlebury College in 1919, and attended Middlebury's summer language school for Spanish in 1923. Abel received a degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan, and an M.A. from the Universidad Nacional in Mexico. She married Warren H. Buffum on July 6, 1925, and later married Harlan C. Brown on June 16, 1936.
Clara May Buffum [Hall] (1887-1982) (Middlebury College class of 1909) was the daughter of John Easton and Helen (Sexton) Buffum. She was born in East Dorset, Vermont. She married Herbert McDonald Hall on August 17, 1911. The couple had one child, Helen Sexton.
The collection is arranged into two series: Helen Abel Buffum letters, and Clara M. Buffum manuscripts. The Helen Buffum letters are arranged chronologically. The Clara Buffum manuscripts maintain the order in which they were found, as all of the materials are undated.
May have been given to the college by Ruth Fowler, second cousin to Helen S. Hall, daughter of Clara Buffum and Herbert Hall (connection between Helen A. Buffum and Clara M. Buffum not clear).
