All of the poems in the collection have been published in Inter alia: The Complete Poetical Works of James Whitcomb Riley (New York, Grosset and Dunlap, 1937). Scope and Contents One holograph letter written by John Burroughs to Walt Whitman, dated Esopus, New York, September 29, 1878. The letter mentions a newspaper article sent to Burroughs by Whitman, an unapproving "Dr. Holland," who appears to dislike Whitman, Poe, and Thoreau, a photograph of Whitman that Burroughs likes, as well as the death of the brother of a mutual friend, "Smith."
