Scope and Contents One holograph letter written by John Burroughs to Walt Whitman, dated Esopus, New York, September 29, 1878. The letter mentions a newspaper article sent to Burroughs by Whitman, an unapproving "Dr. Holland," who appears to dislike Whitman, Poe, and Thoreau, a photograph of Whitman that Burroughs likes, as well as the death of the brother of a mutual friend, "Smith."
